MIRSAC Participates in the Mizoram Science Mela 2024

Aizawl, 10th December 2024 – The Mizoram Science Mela 2024, a two-day event promoting scientific curiosity and innovation, was successfully held from December 10th to 11th at the Innovation Facility Centre (IFC), MINECO, Aizawl. This prestigious event was organized as part of the National Youth Festival, celebrated annually on January 12th to honor the birth anniversary of the eminent Indian scholar and philosopher, Swami Vivekananda. The festival, an initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, aimed to inspire and engage young minds in scientific exploration and innovation.

The main event in Mizoram was jointly organized by the Mizoram Science, Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC) and the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Mizoram. The Science Mela served as a platform for students, researchers, and the public to explore groundbreaking ideas and practical applications of science and technology. With a focus on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, the event encouraged youth participation in hands-on scientific projects and frugal innovations.

The Mela was inaugurated by Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, Hon’ble Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services, at the IFC Hall, MINECO. The event witnessed an enthusiastic response, with 330 students from 10 schools across Aizawl actively participating. Several prestigious scientific institutions, including Mizoram Remote Sensing Application Centre (MIRSAC), Mizoram Science Centre (MSC), and Biodiversity Conservation Network (BIOCONE), showcased intriguing scientific exhibits, cutting-edge equipment, and interactive demonstrations.

The theme of the Mizoram Science Mela 2024, aligned with the National Youth Festival’s overarching theme, was “Innovation in Science and Technology.” The event specifically targeted youth aged 15–19 years, emphasizing frugal innovations, practical applications, and impactful presentations that prioritize creativity and real-world problem-solving over traditional models and craftwork.

Key highlights of the Mela included:

• Live scientific demonstrations at stalls showcasing advancements in remote sensing and its application, drone technology, astronomy, diversity of snake species, and applied sciences.

• STEM workshops designed to cultivate scientific inquiry and technological ingenuity among students.

• Innovation competitions encouraging students to present original scientific ideas with potential applications in society.

• Networking sessions that facilitated collaboration between students, educators, and researchers, fostering a dynamic learning environment.

The event not only celebrated scientific achievements but also underscored the critical role of science and technology in addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development. By providing a collaborative space for young innovators and experts, the Mizoram Science Mela 2024 successfully ignited a passion for scientific exploration and encouraged students to consider future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
